Protobaby - The Spark Launch Night, Dolans 23/03/12 Review

I was anticipating this album release for three years since witnessing their first ever gig back in June 2009 (Review)
Various EPs and single releases wet the appetite for the full debut release now known as The Spark. Tonight saw them pack the very venue they started in for the launch of their brilliant 11 track debut. Check out a mini review of the album I did here.
The first of the three support acts was on stage when I arrived, Derek Ellard the Tipperary born singer songwriter played a nice set as people began to fill the warehouse. He is a big fan of loop pedals and made great use of this throughout the set. He added layers of guitars, vocals and a beat using the loops and it sounded great. Looking forward to hearing more from him.
Next up were young limerick band 'If Memory Serves', The four piece are currently recording their debut E.P to be titled 'Menace Memorial'. The lads are clearly big fans of Arctic monkeys as their sound and on stage antics seem to draw a lot from them. Great to see another good limerick band on the rise.  Keep an eye on them here.
Moscow Metro were the last support act on the night, The lads seem to be growing in confidence each time I see them live. The sound is getting better and really looking forward to their debut ep release which is due out in the coming months. A great lively set as always with the excellent obligatory cover of Tuesday Blues 'Tunnel Vision' included for good measure.

Protobaby took to the stage and blasted into a cracking 12 track set managing to play all the album  and 'Sold you a lie' from their 2010 'Freedom' Ep. The album is one hell of an album, Its great that the album captures the live sound and energy of the band. Yet again another great night of music, Cheers Protobaby. Best of luck for a busy gigging and successful year.

Protobaby let sparks fly

Last night I had the privilege to listen to the final draft of Protobabys debut album 'The Spark' within the walls of where the whole process was mastered thanks to Wav Mastering. It was super to hear the full album at its richest quality using the highest quality mix and out of highest quality speakers and also in the company of the makers of the record, wish I could listen to all albums like this.
We were treated to advanced copies of the album which hits the public on Friday March 23rd, The artwork was done by limerick artist Ken Coleman. Ken has collaborated with the lads on various singles and eps to date and for this album he has come up trumps again.
The eleven track album were all songs I had heard live over the last few years from seeing the band live on many occasions, the only worry I had with the much anticipated debut was that the bands energy and big sound wouldn't transfer well onto cd. The recording team have done a superb job of this, as the tracks sound as epic and in your face as they do on stage.
The album deals with many subject matters including politics, religion, love and includes the track "Nobody Knows" which is dedicated to a friend who lost his life in tragic circumstances. On a whole the album is an absolute gem, looking forward to seeing it launched in dolans on March 23rd. This is a night not to be missed.Once again another huge record to come out of Limerick in recent years and one certainly to be proud of! Cheers lads!
We were also treated to an advance screening of the new video for the single 'Fluorescent' which was official aired today, check it out below. Another fine masterpiece by Shane Serrano.
