Kiernan McMullan Live at Dolans, Limerick 05/06/2009 REVIEW

Dolans tonight is to play host to a headline show for Kiernan Mcmullan and two great support acts. The warehouse wasn't majorly packed but a nice crowd all the same for a miserable Friday night. First act to take to the stage were local band “protobaby”, The lead singers voice not unlike Ian Curtis and the Interpol vibe was oozing from them. Their sound was quite amazing and it was if we were listening to an album unfold on front of us. This kind of thing only happens when you have been gigging or practicing for so long and these guys have that down. Such a tight unit. Really looking forward to getting my hands on some of their music but for now we will have to be content with listening to them on their myspace http://www.myspace.com/protobaby Protobaby play Dolans once again on august 14th, this show is one to get yourself down to. Second act of the night were “TKO”, This six piece music machine got straight into it and played a stormer. I like the cut of their jibe, dance along fun with added clarinet and violin! Their sound is very Ska/Reggie upbeat music, well a mix of about everything really, it shouldnt work but it damn well does. They threw a few covers into their set which included the Beach Boys, Mary by “the four of us” and more. At one point the bass player armed with an mouth organ jumped off stage and played around the crowd and for the finale went back into the crowd handing out sweets, A great touch and a great ending to their set. I would hope to catch this guys live again. Their also working on an album and should be out anytime soon. TKO Setlist: 1. Burned Out 2. KMT 3. Hiding in the corner 4. Bitter Twist 5. Game Over 6. The Busker Keep an eye on their progress here http://www.myspace.com/tkohq Now it was the turn of the headliner to entertain us and that he did. Kiernan was backed by three other band members and this was the first time they had played together for awhile due to him being on the road over in the US. The songs are amazing each one with a unique story behind, such as their love for a cartoon show called "The Venture bros" or a song about his 9 year old cousins view on life. This my second time seeing the guy and his catalogue just keeps on getting better. We were all treated to a free CD when leaving. A sample of 5 tracks from his new Album which is currently available on itunes “Perfect People are Boring”. It looks like he is off to the states once again at the end of the month, so best of luck with that, keep track with him here http://www.myspace.com/kiernanm Cheers for a great night of music! Kiernans Set List: Fireworks Hold on No to Only angry What was I thinking Cardboard Swords Talk about it Borderline Do it rite Funk no. Grace Ballad Grace Ballad Encore: Afternoon Stick it out
