An Indielimerick favourite is back in Limerick after a absense of three years , Kevin May from Ballinrobe, and Mick Lynch from Westport will play the upstairs venue in Dolans on Friday the 14th of September.
The band are situated now in the US and have been creating quite a stir and building a massive fan base over there.
Ive had the pleasure of seeing the band live on three occasions, last time back in May 2009 (review here). The band are always on the ipod and are a constant addition to any playlist of mine.
Their three albums are a joy to listen to and well worth checking out, they are currently on the cusp of a new release.
This fourth album was a pledge effort and was very unique in that they recorded twenty tracks and then asked the pledgers to chose twelve to make the final record. Unfortunately I personally didnt get to pledge and chose tracks ( No credit card at the time), hopefully ill get a chance to listen to all twenty at some point. Hopefully this untitled album will be ready come gig time in dolans.
Looking forward to it!

Kasabian & Noel Gallagher live at Marlay Park 23/08/12
An amazing line up for a night in Marlay park was my first impressions when seeing the ads for the gig a couple of months ago, Considering no Oxegen and not the best Picnic headliners in my own opinion this Marlay Park gig was the best gig of the summer with all the festival vibe and you don't even have to stay in a tent! Tickets were immediately bought and a cheap hotel booked.
It wasn't a bad afternoon in the capital just the odd misting showers and the ground/grass was holding its own, all in all a grand evening for an outdoor gig. The security in Marlay Park was very tight. We had double searches entering the gig area including metal detectors and all our pockets had to be emptied into clear plastic bags. It was all very airport/prison security stuff of coarse all measures hyped up due to the mess that happened at a gig earlier in the year in the phoenix park. Not great fun going through these checks and a kind of a dampener when heading into a gig but in hindsight it makes complete sense. It was very reassuring to see so many security staff and Gardaà around the grounds. It should really be like this all the time.
I missed Maverick Sabre due to pre-gig pints but doubt I missed too much. The Cribs were in mid set walking in, This is one band I never really got into and I don't think after several listens I ever will. Not that I don't think they aren't good musicians as they are clearly good and what they do, and it is also clear watching the pit dwellers jumping around singing back to the band that they have a good following. I can't seem to warm to the music , it all seems a bit too out there and shouty but who knows one day they might surprise me.
More pints and burgers and it was time for Noel Gallagher to grace the festival stage, Last time I saw Noel live was back in 2009 headlining the mighty Slane. Little did I know that the band would be no more only a couple of month later. That was one hell of a gig and strangely enough the first time I had witnessed Kasabian live. Tonight saw the roles reversed as Noel became the support artist.
Noel launched straight into an Oasis number '(It’s Good) To Be Free' however two minutes into the song the sound went, the band looking to the side of the stage with puzzlement. Off they went and fifteen minutes later after several 'sorry bla bla announcements' Noel came back on to great applause and cracked into another Oasis number 'Mucky Fingers' yet again the song was interrupted by a power failure of some sort. It was getting all a bit ridiculous at this stage and it was clear the band were close to breaking point. Another fifteen minutes passed and in fairness to Noel they came back out and soldiered on and played a blinder of a set with no annoying interruptions. As Noel said after the first uninterrupted song 'sorry about that fucking nonsense' and later quip 'They had to put 50p in the Metre'
The set included a nice mix of classic Oasis and stuff from the High Flying Birds debut album. Its was great to hear '
Half the World Away' a real favourite of mine. The Oasis numbers didn't even need Noel signing at times as the crowd were nearly drowning him out, It's always a pleasure to see such a genius at work. The final track 'Don’t Look Back in Anger' was the biggest sing along with the crowd and it was clear the band were enjoying it just as much. The power problem might have been too much for him though as he ended the night by saying it would be his last Dublin gig for a long time which was met with boos and he said 'Hey, It's a big world'. This might also be due to the fact he has played a string of Irish gigs over the last year. Either way the gig was great, looking forward to hearing more from the birds.

Kasabian arrived on stage just as the dusk had set in, the stage lighting now in its element as the tribal velociraptor symbol was adorning the back drop. The band bounded on stage and cracked straight into their new single 'Days Are Forgotten'. The gig was one mass sing along, everyone just jumped around and had a ball. The band were flawless and at times seemed so good it sounded recorded.
Now having four albums in their discography they are clearly and awesome live band. Having hit after hit in their arsenal it was hard to keep your breath from belting out the fan favourites.
For me the album that sealed this was 2009s 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum' , its one hell of an album and boosts a serious amount of non fillers, this is then backed up with another stomper in the form of 2011s 'Velociraptor!'.
The set was amazingly good and the crowd were top notch , The seamlessly integrated covers adding to the greatness in the form of 'Praise You' by Fatboy Slim and Serge's cover of 'Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime' by The Korgis. Lead singer Tom Meighan spoke to the crowd of his Irish green blood and his proud Irish heritage and throughout the night gave us a serious passionate performance. Tom also treated us at the end of the night to an A-Capella version of the Beatles' 'She Loves You'
The video below showing a snippet of the final song 'Fire' tells all really. You know you were at the great gig when leaving the grounds your hoarse and your legs are crazy tired.
Cheers for a great night and I think I was right when seeing the billing , Gig of the year!

Funeral Suits live at Bourkes , Limerick 21/06/12
The longest day of the year consisted of a mad dash not to miss The Funeral Suits play Bourkes on a miserable wet June night. I arrived just in time to see off the warm up band of Ghost Estates. Pity I missed the whole set but the last two songs sounded great, will hopefully catch them again.
Next up later than billed thank god were the excellent headliners, They had cancelled their last gig here so tonight was there rescheduled gig. I had been waiting three years to see this band live again, after a super support slot to Franz Ferdinand in Dolans in 2009 (Review). I knew they were destined for big things upon hearing them back then and their 'Eye Spy' EP release has been on playlist ever since, It has also taken those years to produce their very long awaited debut album 'Lily of the Valley' which was released at the start of the month. In the intervening years they have gigging a crazy amount and its clear the difference in their appearance from three ago to tonight on stage. The battled hardened lads haven't changed that awesome electro rock sound that's clear its the funeral suits sound. Splashes of Vampire Weekend and MGMT but on a whole they are unique for this Dublin/Limerick outfit.
The band were playing musical chairs with the instruments tonight and interchanged throughout the set, They played a blistering set of tracks from the brilliant debut album. I have been listening to the album constant over the last few weeks, this one is one to get! Another cracking night in a packed Bourkes, Looking forward to catching them live again very soon, Cheers!

The Minutes live at Bourkes, Limerick 14/06/12
After a trashing against the Spanish in the euros what better way to end the night of sporting misery with a great gig in Bourkes, The small venue was jam packed in anticipation of the Dublin headliners, the gig had been rescheduled twice in the past so tonight we were finally going to witness this live beast up close and personal, I haven't had the pleasure of catching them live yet but their 2011 release "Marcata" is a regular on the pod.
Local band 'Moscow Metro' opened up proceedings with a nice short set of tracks, The lads have been busy gigging around the country since I last saw them and their set seems to grow in quality each time. They are making great in roads in the music scene securing high profile gigs here and there, The band play the Body & Soul Festival at the end of the month. Looking forward to a release from the lads soon. Keep an eye on them here.
The Minutes arrived on stage to the Irish soccer anthem 'Put 'em under Pressure' with the crowd shouting Ole Ole! Clearly the 4-0 defeat behind us the band lashed into a high energy twelve track set. The album is superb and certainly one to get but live they added another dimension of greatness. The three lads were belting through the set full of sweat and delivering everything I had expected from the furious rock album 'Marcata'. The drummer Shane Kinsella was a joy to watch, kitted out in a paddy cap and wife beater top literally putting all his might into his drum kit. They seemed to be really enjoying themselves as the lead singer Mark Austin pounded his guitar against the over head beams and wandering into the crowd throughout the night. Its amazing to have this good a band play in a small pub in town with free entry, The band had just played the download festival at the weekend and have a crazy gig schedule lined up for the rest of the year which takes in support slots for Bruce Springsteen in Hyde Park, The Stone Roses in the Phoenix Park and Foo Fighters & The Black Keys in Belfast. Ill let the videos below do the rest of the blabbering. One of the best gigs for awhile, Cheers to Bourkes for a great night!
Set List:
Highway 51
Gold
Believer
Meet me in the Morning
Supernatural
Black Keys

The Riptide Movement live at Dolans, Limerick 25/05/12
After one of the hottest days in years what better way to end the night but rocking out in Dolans to The Riptide Movement. First up on the night were the brilliant local outfit Dead Red Light, The lads are in the process of bringing out an ep soon. They played a nice high energy set, Keep an eye on them here
Next up were the four lads from Dublin know as The Riptide Movement, Been looking forward to this gig as I have been playing their recently released album 'Keep on, Keepin' on' a lot of late.
The album is void of filler and is just not stop foot stomping stuff, This continued onto the stage tonight with a superb high energy performance. They kicked off the night with 'What About the Tip Jars?' the title track from their 2009 album release. The drummer was great to watch if we wasn't hitting the drum, he was hitting his head, full of energy! Definite touches of Keith Moon's madness. You know your in for a good night when the bassist is taping up his finger tips, the band were excellent throughout.
Don't think ill be able to hear rattling bog sang in a pub without thinking of the lads awesome version with full on rock interludes, Delighted to catch them live and their sound transfers to the live stage as good as the album if not better. They ended the night with 'Eye of the Storm', both bassist and lead guitar pounding away at separate drums then some glitter confetti blasted out from the side of the stage covering the front of the upstairs venue, Some ending! The band are currently on tour , I urge you to go and catch them live if you can. If not, go out and get yourself the new album, its a cracker! Check them out here
Cheers for a great night. Enjoy the videos below.
