Music Snippets # 20 - Van Cleef

Hail From : Dublin Band Members : FEATHER - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar ALAN JACKSON - Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals MARK COMMINS - Bass Guitar MICHAEL TEEHAN - Drums & Percussion
About : I recently got a hold of these guys debut album "Super Villainesque", What more do you want from an album when you have a whole song dedicated to Scarlett Johansson! There are some great songs in this 12 track debut most notable a track by the name of "Prince". The album is very charming and you cant help but smile listening to it. The album ebs and flows from very upbeat rock to the opposite in such tracks as "One of the Cosby's". These guys are a very likable band and I can only estimate that these guys are even better live. With a heavy gigging schedule planned I'm sure ill be able to sample this. The guys are worth checking out, Gig Listings are below and their myspace link. They have a list of stores where you can purchase their new album if itunes doesn't float your boat. Check them out!

Lisa Hannigan Live at St.Johns Church, Limerick REVIEW + MINI BOOTLEG

Tonight we were met with an amazing setting of St.John’s Church. The congregation were flooding into this small quaint church to follow the preaching’s of Lisa Hannigan. The church in no longer in use for religious reason but rather a dance and art hall called the Daghada Space. It got its first gig thanks to eightball during the year, where Glen Hansard and Marketa irglova took to the alter. Tonight sees its second gig take place to a church that has run out of seats and a bar that is well stocked. I wonder was it ever this full before?
The stage is adored with all lisa’s trinkets such as her now iconic table adorned with her Harmonium and Light up mushroom. Various instruments are strewn about the place all tied together with fairly lights. I wasn’t aware of a support act for tonight but low and behold a guy has started playing, A guy would guess would be a support act more of an awkward suits salesman. He went by the name of Mublin Deaf Ro. He sang little over seven songs each packed with an amazing story. He filled us in on the details before and even during some of the songs. Such songs as “Trouble under a murder Moon” a tale about murderous sisters and “Brother Peter” and novice priest thinking was this the right choice inn life. All his songs contained wonderful quirky short stories and even quirkier guitar playing. A very interesting character and a very interesting set. You can check him out here http://www.myspace.com/mumblindeafro. I got a copy of his latest album “The hearing and the brine” so I am off to be transported into a world of short stories. Next came the main act Lisa and her merry men. It has been just over ten months since I last saw Lisa in UL ( Review here : http://indielimerick.blogspot.com/2008/09/lisa-hannigan-jean-monetul-24092008.html) I thought back then the harmony and tight knit of the band couldn’t get better, but it seems a tour across America will bring a band from the brilliant to the sublime. The band were incredible tight and everything sounded amazing. The acoustics in the church along with Lisa’s voice added a fantastic haunting quality. I had to double check at times to see that there was only five on stage as the sound they were making was sometimes orchestral. Five songs we were treated to an amazing version of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” , I think Lisa could cover any song and make it something special. Another song later and again were treated to a cover song, this time a John Martyn song “I Couldn’t Love You More”. She said it was her favourite song bar the Ghostbusters theme tune but this was her “cool” favourite song. The set drew mainly from her fantastic debut album “Sea Sew”, which was just recently nominated for a mercury award. The set also included two new songs in the form of Brolly Beats and Passenger. The later of the two was played as the first encore with Lisa on stage alone armed with a mandolin. The song clearly drew influence from the latest US tour and showed a bight future for what’s to come from the follow up to “sea sew”. The church is a fantastic venue and tonight saw an incredible night of music. If you haven’t seen this girl live yet get out and check her out, look forward to hearing her again and listening to the new album. Congratulations to all involved in setting this night up it was run with great precision. Cheers! Set List : Pistachio Sea Song Splishy Splashy Courting Blues Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues (Bob Dylan Cover) Venn Diagram I Couldn’t Love You More (John Martyn Cover) Ocean and a Rock My Pirate Disco I Don’t Know Brolly Beats (New Song) Blurry Teeth Lille Encore : Passenger ( New Song) Keep it all

Music Snippets # 19 - Ugly Beautiful

Hail From :
Cork Band Members : Kieran Lane - guitar, vocals Michal Falender - Drums Mick Gallagher - Bass About : This Cork three piece have had a few changes over the years since their formation in 2007. Namely a name change from Satellite Escape to Ugly Beautiful and some changes in line up of the band brings up to a new look for 2009. This year sees the band bring their debut album to the world in the form of 9 Track "Paradise". The guys describe themselves as "my bloody valentine meets smashing pumpkins, has a drink with Jeff Buckley on a bad day" Which is weirdly accurate. The album is a great listen and even though I havent caught them live yet im sure this transfers very well. Until I do see them preform ill have to be content with the album which can be purchased on itunes. Their mypace has a list of upcoming gigs and pictures, check it out below.

Bon Iver Live At The Galway Arts Festival, 23/07/2009 REVIEW & BOOTLEG

What an amazing night to be part of, The Arts Festival was in its second last night of 2009 and the Big Top was being filled up to witness Bon Iver. I found myself a spot right at the front surrounded by giddy students. The organisers came out to conduct a Guinness World Record using the crowd. I have always wanted to be in that book so was quite excited to take part; they had the whole crowd perform a bow on the count of three making us involved in the biggest bow performed in a tent! We were first treated to a superb set from Alela Diane, whose soulful alt country rock kept the crowd entertained before the big act. She was joined on stage by her Father on guitar and Alina Hardin on Backing Vocals. I got her album “To Be Still” prior to the gig and it is well worth checking out. She put on a great show and ill be looking forward to hearing more from her.
Then on came Bon Iver to much applause and screaming from the crowd and got straight down to the business at hand, as soon as the first few bars of Flume were played a silence was reached from the crowd that were almost in awe of the lyrics and sound apart from one or two who decided to talk throughout for some moronic reason. I was introduced late to Justin Vernons album "For Emma, Forever Ago" back in April 2008, Ever since then the album has been constantly in rotation. Bon Iver made it to my list of bands I must see before I die. I was really glad to tick him off the list. The gig tonight was simple flawless and a serious contender for a top ten slot in the best gigs I have ever witnessed, just the emotions that were laid out in front of us was awe inspiring. The lyrics are quite amazing and somehow come to life even more live, He spoke of his love of Ireland and Galway especially as he had lived here for four months, 8 years ago working in the eircell shop selling phones. He commented how a lot has changed, no more snackbox on shop street much to the amusement of the crowd. The set drew mainly from his debut album, playing all but two. He played all of his new E.P. Blood bank except one and played a new song Brackett, WI which can be found on the charity record “Dark Was The Night”. He also included in his set a cover of the Yo La Tengo song "I Feel Like Going Home", which was sang by his bassist Matthew McCaughan. The night had many highlights which can be seen in video form below, all are mine except wolves, here are just some of the amazing bits: The complete hush from the crowd as he got straight into Flume, The outro to Creature fear was just incredible as the Drummer Sean Carey went to work on his drum kit.The crowd singing happy birthday to the Guitarist Mike Noyce for his 22nd bday. "For Emma" got the crowd going and was just perfect with the acoustics in the tent. The crowd in general were in fine voice and were the added backing vocalists to this great performance. The crowning moment though was “Wolves”, the crowd were asked to sing a line in the song and boy did they do it justice, the roof was nearly lifted, the gig finished and I walked to the roisin dubh with the hairs on the back of my neck in shock. Bon Iver Set List : Flume Lump Sum Creature Fear Brackett,WI Skinny Love Babys Blood Bank Re: Stacks I Feel Like Going Home - Yo La Tengo Cover For Emma, Forever Ago Encore : Beach Baby Wolves (Act I and II)
