Neil Young - Malahide Castle,Dublin 29/06/08 Review

That was it another Tick off the list of Gigs I must see before I Die. We entered into the gig early and caught Neil’s sound check and from the first strum I knew this was going to be a great experience, the grounds of the castle was beginning to fill up and for a 24 year old it was a strange atmosphere of young and old and really old.

The first band to adorn the stage was “Everest”. These guys hailed from California and I must say had a very impressive sound for such a young band. They spent most of their time saying how pleased they were for the opportunity to tour with Neil and during one part of their short set the lead singer said it was the happiest day of his life.
During their set Glen Hansard join the lads to give a hand in one of their songs.

Glen entered the stage once again a little while later this time accompanied by the Full Band “The Frames” plus newbie Oscar winner “Marketa Irglova”. They were very pleased to be there and played some old and new stuff. (Set Below). Revelate for me was the highlight and they steered away from the usually favourites and played mellow numbers instead but all in all the sound was pitch perfect.

The crowd were then treated to the first half of the Euro 08 final sans Commentary but we got the best of the match by the sounds of it. While the Spanish were battling hard to fight off the german attack the screen went black and the inevitable happened.

Neil walks on stage with a cocky stride that is only capable after years of touring and just literally lashed into the best song of the night “Love and Only Love”. He commented on the Canadian flag that adorned Malahide Castle and thanked the crowd for being there.
The set itself had songs from early albums to new ones but with a back catalogue that would take a solid day to get through, no one was going to get exactly what they wanted.

My highlights were “Hey Hey My My”, “Old Man”,"Needle and the Damage Done"and “Mr. Soul”. There were complaints of long outros and solos but isn’t that what Neil Young does? Fair enough 26 minutes on “No Hidden Path” was a bit extensive but it was a pleasure watching the genius at work just enjoying it.
When closing your eyes during some solos it was just amazing the sound that was being made and it truly was one of the greatest gigs I have ever witnessed.
Neil plays Cork tonight and you are truly in for a treat.
Enjoy!

Seven Songs

It's blog meme time again. Panadola Diction has tagged me. http://panadoladiction.com/ The Aim of this Tagging is : "List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your [summer]. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. " So here goes : 1. Coldplay - 42 Its that beatle intro feel that gets me everytime and when it kicks off half way through genius stuff! 2. Bon Iver - Flume Trying hard not to keep playing this record at the moment, such haunting brilliance 3. Supergrass - St.Petersburg Always loved this song but saw them again live by complete accident in paris and fell right back in love with it 4. Interpol - Pioneer To The Falls Any playlist I make, cant live without this one , The intro still gives me chills 5. Neil Young - Ambulance Blues From his On the Beach album , im loving this song as it makes no sense and you know he knows that. 6. Ryan Adams - The Sun Also Sets Just an amazing song , if this doesnt make your hair stand on the back of your neck there is something wrong. 7. Radiohead - House of Cards In rainbows as been on non stop for awhile now and just cant stop listening to this particular one, just loves it! This List was drawn up quite quick but it really does give an insight to the listener. I am supposed to Tag some other people but ill just Tag everyone who looks at this go ahead make your list of seven. Happy Tagging!

Bands You Must See Before You Die

We all have that list and we all tick them off as we go. Who is on your List? Who have you ticked off from your list?
Recently I have ticked off quite a few.
Ryan Adams and Radiohead being the most recent.
Off the top of my head my list looks something like this :

Neil Young
(Going to see him Sunday Week :)

Travis
(Seeing them in September at Cois Farriage)

Bob Dylan
(Wasted Opportunities)

Morrissey
(Playing in Cork , Ticket Price + Too many gigs already = Excuse)

Oasis
(Annoyed I have never seen these guys , so many wasted opportunities)

The White Stripes
( Nearly Did at Oxegen but they pulled out at the last minute)

Led Zeppelin
(Doubtful)

The Rolling Stones
(Who Knows Maybe One Day)

David Bowie
(Nearly Did at Oxegen but he pulled out at the last minute)

Pink Floyd
(Doubt that will happen)

The Libertines
(Surely the comeback will happen one day)

I am sure there is many more I cant think of right now. What happens when I see all these bands, Do I go to Music Heaven and just wallow in the glory of past gigs or will there always be bands coming and going with that must see stamp on them? Whats on your list?

Glad I got this off my chest.

Supergrass Live Elysée Montmartre, Paris 12/06/08 REVIEW

I found myself in Paris for the second time last weekend, the intention of once again visiting all the tourist hot spots and I did do just that including Jim Morrison’s Grave which was really interesting. Anyhow I found myself in Montemartre on Thursday night and looking at this old building called Elysée Montmartre also designed by Gustaf Eiffel. The building was surrounded by hoards of people, then I realised it was a gig they were waiting for. Two touts tickets later I too was waiting for Supergrass.
The building inside was something else, just beautiful. The support act came on called Mida and the Medicine Show. An interesting band well able to produce a great sound and keep the crowd entertained.
I was still trying to figure how this all was happening; it was like a mad dream. Supergrass came on to great applause and went straight into a track from their new album called “Diamond Hoo Ha Man”. They told the crowd it was their first gig in Paris for three years.
The lighting they had setup was amazing projecting words of the songs plus images and live streaming of the concert.
The set list included new and old and the place was buzzing from start to finish. The crowd were an interesting bunch think Costello’s on a Saturday night just in French le Costello! Supergrass are one to catch live and amazingly enough ill see them again as I secured tickets for the Cois Farriage Festival in Kilkee this September. (Details here

Radiohead Live Malahide Castle,Dublin 07/06/08 Review

I went!
2 and a bit hours of magic happened in the grounds of Malahide Castle last Saturday, Radiohead were on their second night of their extensive European tour. First of all what an amazing place to have a gig, such a great relaxed atmosphere, everyone was lying out enjoying the sun with pint in hand.
The support act came on around half seven “Bat for Lashes”. This female fronted band sounded a bit like Portishead/Goldfrappish and added if anything to the chilled vibe of the castle grounds. Radiohead began around half nine and I got exactly what it said on the tin.
Radiohead are truly one of the best live acts in the world and are in no doubt of the best bands in music history.
The set list was made up of mainly “In Rainbows” with some oldies played for good measure in the form of “Idioteque”, “There There” and “Planet Telex” and many more.
Thom seemed really relaxed and seemed to be really enjoying the night and the crowd. The sound was unreal and just blew me away completely. Every little detail was first class from the lighting to the music. Thom’s Eyes shut and head shaking, his every move provoking screams of delirium in the crowd as he runs through “In Rainbow” Numbers.
There is no band in the world like them and the quality is untouchable live. They played “there there” and went off and the crowd stood there confident of a return, I was also confident of at least 3 or four more songs.
They returned to blast out 8 more classics including a brand new song played by Thom alone on the piano.
This gig was amazing and I am so glad I can tick them off my “Band to see before I Die List”

Set List:
1. 15 Step
2. Bodysnatchers
3. Airbag
4. Bangers and Mash
5. Nude
6. Pyramid Song

8. The Gloaming
9. National Anthem
10. Faust Arp
11. Videotape
12. Optimistic
13. Where I End and You Begin
14. Reckoner
15. Everything In Its Right Place
16. All I Need
17. There There

FIRST ENCORE
18. Exit Music (for a film)
19. Jigsaw Falling Into Place
20. Climbing Up The Walls
21. Planet Telex
22. How To Disappear Completely

Dirty Pretty Things Live@Dolans 02/06/08 Review

( Cheers Again Man!)

Free Bands, Free Beer and Free t-shirts what more could you ask for from a gig??
Last Monday saw Dolan’s Warehouse transform into some sort of Green Heineken Arena and no expense was spared.
What hit you right away was the time and effort into this transformation green lighting everywhere in the shape of green balls, fairy lights and strip lighting.
Projector screens filled the walls of the warehouse showing various images and also the bands performances plus crowd shots, various flat screen TV's were plotted around the place and a full fridge of Heineken to get through for free.
The first occupant on stage was a singer songerwriter dude called Kieran Leonard (Cross between Jeff Buckley/Eddie Vedder/Bon Iver). He warmed the crowd nicely and was seen later on stage playing with the main act.

Supermodel Twins were then to embark on the stage but wait who are these loons it was Walter Mitty and the Realists (Some sort of a reschedule).
They really got the crowd going with some surreal tunes and some crazy titles such as “My inner child’s a drum kit”. The lead singer Niall sure is animated and makes you tired just watching the guy(Cross Between The Automatic and a wild Panda). They went on to play a rip roaring set and set the scene for the evening.
Then the main act loomed just as the Heineken fridge was emptying Carl Barat waltzed on stage wielding a bottle of Jemison and a bottle of coke. He drank straight from the bobba all night and it didnt seem to faze him one bit.

Dirty Pretty Things seemed to be really tight and played quite a lot from both old and new albums. “Bang Bang you’re Dead” being the highlight as the crowd went completely nuts to the trumpet intro. The crowd wasnt as crazy as I had anticipated, maybe this was due to the freeness of the gig and true DPT fans werent able to get tickets and music fans alike however the night sure was a great one, Cheers Heineken & Dolans.
